Sherry

Sherry first came to the UK from southern Spain in the 18th century and quickly established itself as a firm favourite. Over the years it has earned itself a reputation as an elegant drink to be savoured and enjoyed in refined style. Part of this has to do with the type of glass it is served in.

Sherry glasses are usually small and narrow, allowing a perfect amount of sherry to be poured and sipped. The design of sherry glasses within these parameters can vary, however. For example, you can get sherry glasses that resemble miniature wine glasses with small bowls sitting on narrow stems. You can also get sherry glasses that copy the design of Spanish copita glasses of small champagne flutes. So, however you like to serve your sherry, you can find glasses to suit your style.

Sherry glasses can also double up as port glasses. Port, like sherry, comes from the Iberian Peninsula. It is a type of fortified wine made in the northern Douro region of Portugal. Wine is made in the traditional way and then stabilised with the addition of a grape brandy known as aguardente. It is this spirit that gives port its strength and rich taste, and meant it could be more easily transported. This is also how it came to become such a popular pick with Brits.

Like sherry glasses, port is served in measures in small glasses. Both drinks should be sipped and savoured, allowing the rich flavours to develop on the palette. Sherry and port are making a big comeback. That’s why it’s a good idea for your bar, restaurant or establishment to have a selection of port and sherry glasses to hand.
